about
This is a whimsical love song to my broken synthesizer - painfully autobiographical and painfully self-explanatory. I hope you enjoy.
The synthesizer in question was a birthday present and I snapped its wire on the second day of use, leaving half dangling from the input jack and the other half hanging limp from the socket at the wall. It made me sad, and so I wrote a song about it. On a lighter note though, the synth is now fixed, and it is just as cryptic to operate as the day I first powered it on. So there you go, a happy ending to this 4 and a half minute melodrama about breaking an inanimate object. Some may call it pathetic...they would be right, but I like it all the same. It is sometimes fun the let out the crying little boy who dropped his ice cream.
Feel free to apply whatever deeper meaning you like to it, whether that be an academic headscratcher on the state of consumerism within music industry, or some troubling extended metaphor for a broken down relationship. After all, one's eyes see the widest when squinted.
Sparkling endorsement complete, give it a listen and let us know what you think. Thank you for your time.
Yours Sincerely,
Cable Car Disaster - P W Murphy
lyrics
I broke my synthesizer today.
I'd only had it for the weekend, and I was just starting to get the hang of it.
I broke my synthesizer today.
As if. Things couldn't get much worse.
I'm stuck inside. I haven't showered. My first world problems hurt.
I broke my synthesizer today.
I still don't know what your controls do.
This isn't fair; I was just starting to know you.
I broke my synthesizer today,
And I am chocked full with remorse.
My heavy dyspraxic feet didn't mean to snap the power source.
And if you were still with me today,
I'd write sequence for this part,
But you are not with me today.
Instead, I've got a guitar.
I broke my synthesizer today.
It was unlucky but my fault, if i could just be bothered to clean up my room for once.
I broke my synthesizer today.
Disorganisation takes another innocent, unsuspecting piece of gear.
And if you were still with me today,
I'd write a sequence for this part.
But, you are not with me today.
Your lifeless shell's on the floor.
You see these little ditties I do,
Always the well trodden path that I choose,
And i can not help but walk down them.
That's really why i wanted a synth.
And if you were still with me today,
I'd write sequence for this part,
But you are not with me today.
Instead, I've got a guitar.
And if you were still with me today,
I'd write sequence for this part,
But you are not with me today.
Instead, I've got a guitar.
You see these little ditties I do,
Always the well trodden path that I choose,
And i can not help but walk down them.
That's really why i wanted a synth.
I broke my synthesizer today.
I'd only had it for the weekend, and I was just starting to get the hang of it.
I broke my synthesizer today.
I still don't know what your controls do.
This isn't fair; I was just starting to know you.

This is Cable Car Disaster, a project began in the first lockdown out of boredom
and guilt. All songs recorded on one mic into a stolen DAW. Long live low fidelity and give me your money.
